Police are appealing to parents, guardians, grandparents and anyone who may care for a young person to ensure that the young people are as safe a possible when they are out on their bikes in darkness.
Members of our Neighbourhood Teams are concerned about the number of young people riding bikes in the hours of darkness without any lighting on the bikes.
If a bike is used in the hours of darkness it should have working front and rear lights irrelevant of what type of bike it is.
Light coloured easily seen or reflective clothing is also advisable
The legal bit
it is the law in Great Britain for bicycles to have a white front light, a red rear light, and a red rear reflector when cycling between sunset and sunrise, along with amber pedal reflectors if the bike was manufactured after October 1985. Flashing lights are permitted but must flash between 60 and 240 times per minute.
More importantly we don't want anyone injured and really don't want to be knocking on your door to let you know someone you care about is hurt.
