Devon County Council are supporting and empowering communities across the county by raising awareness of flood risk, and promoting practical steps that will help residents feel more confident and prepared for flooding.
As climate change continues to bring more frequent and intense rainfall, flooding remains a serious threat to people, property, and livelihoods across England.
Around 6.3 million homes and businesses are in areas vulnerable to flooding, and many don’t even realise.
With heightened awareness, the correct knowledge, and preparation, we can build a county that is better equipped to face these challenges and reduce the impact of future floods.
That is why the Council are encouraging everyone to take part in Flood Action Week and stay flood aware – not just this week, but for the long term.
Simple Actions You Can Take This Week
- Make a flood plan: This could be a personal, family, community, or business plan, and should include emergency procedures, evacuation routes, and key contact details so you know what to do if flooding occurs.
- Prepare a flood kit: Pack essentials like torches, a mobile phone, non-perishable food, bottled water, medication, important documents, and warm clothing.
- Sign up for free flood warnings to stay informed and act early. You can sign up here.
- Check your flood risk online for the next 5 days and in the long-term: You can do this here and here.
- Protect your property: Store valuables higher up and consider installing flood doors, barriers, or other resistance and resilience measures.
