Officers from Exeter Neighbourhood Police Team are once again collecting food items to fill annual Christmas hampers for elderly people in the local community.

They started this tradition in 2020 and look forward to giving back again this year.

Sergeant Jim Wellard explained: “As a team we see first-hand how crime and anti-social behaviour affects older and vulnerable people every day and we are fortunate enough to be able to give back to the community.

“We would be really grateful for food donations to help us create as many hampers as possible and suggested items to donate include mince pies, Christmas cake, crackers, chocolates, tea and coffee, as well as tinned food.

“If you would like to donate items for the hampers please visit the Exeter Police Facebook page and leave a comment or email 30444@dc.police.uk to arrange collection. We can also arrange a drop off point for you. Please spread the word so we can arrange plenty of hampers for those who will really appreciate them. Many people in our communities live alone or may be socially isolated over the festive season. It’s good to spread some festive cheer at this time of year.

“We are always very thankful to have the support of members of the public with this every year and we thank you again for your support and kindness this year too.”

Those donating are asked not to send direct messages on social media.

Exeter is a very busy place with shoppers and visitors, as well as residents at this time of year. Our police officers are on high visibility patrols over the coming weeks to keep everyone safe. Please say hello when you see them, and please stop them to discuss any issues you have.

Officers also have the support of the Community Safety Team, who were launched in the summer and provide an extra presence around the city. Exeter is a hotspot policing area which is subject to additional funding from the Home Office to tackle anti-social behaviour.
