It was reported that a car was in collision with a pedestrian on Fire Beacon Lane, near the Bowd Inn, Sidmouth, between 12.45pm and 2.30pm, on Thursday 26 December.
The pedestrian, a man in his 90s, was helped by a number of people. Initially his injuries were not thought to be too serious, and he returned home.
His condition deteriorated during the afternoon, an ambulance was called, and the man was admitted to hospital with potentially serious injuries.
The ambulance service notified police of the collision at around 6.45pm.
Officers are now appealing for the driver of the car involved in the collision to come forward. The driver remained at the scene, but no details were taken at the time.
