A public appeal from Inspector Helm of Exmouth Neighbourhood Police Team
Exmouth is not that big of a town. As the neighbourhood team, we are likely aware of all the 'street attached' (you may call them as homeless) people here, as are the relevant support services.
A plea from us is to never ever donate money to those begging. We have persons that aggressively beg in the town causing anti-social behaviour and intimidation to the public which is completely unacceptable. We also occasionally have 'gangs' of 'international' people that pay us a visit pretended to be be homeless and begging as well.
There is no shortage of support for those in need in our community and this includes clothing, food, shelter, health and onward life choice support. This is provided by EDDC as well as the Open Door Centre in Church Street. If you come across a person you are concerned for, direct them to the Open Door Centre.
Remember that some people actively chose to live a nomadic lifestyle and we have those in Exmouth too. Remember that you may think you are helping but your well intended charity is fuelling street disorder and your money is potentially/likely being spent on alcohol or even drugs.
If you wish to donate money, we would always direct you to the Open Door Centre where your support can make a genuine difference to many more hidden and genuine vulnerabilities in our community.
Thanks, Inspector Helm.
