Budleigh Salterton's public toilets on Station Road will continue to serve residents and visitors as Budleigh Town Council takes over their management.
Earlier this month, Budleigh Salterton's councillors unanimously voted to acquire the freehold of the public toilets on Station Road from East Devon District Council (EDDC), and to undertake the responsibility for their cleaning and maintenance.
Effective from April 1, 2025, the toilets will continue to operate under the management of EDDC until the transition occurs. Uncertainty had loomed over the fate of these facilities since EDDC announced its review of public toilets in 2021. Under the review, EDDC designated 15 'Category A' public conveniences in East Devon's main towns for retention and improvement, while others in 'Category B' were to be made available for rent or lease with a stipulation to maintain public access.
In Budleigh Salterton, the toilet blocks at Cliff Path and Lime Kiln were classified as Category A, while the six cubicles on Station Road fell under Category B. Ongoing discussions between Budleigh Town Council and EDDC culminated in a satisfactory agreement reached prior to an extraordinary meeting of the town council on April 15, where the decision to acquire the toilets was unanimously endorsed.
Following the takeover, Budleigh Salterton Town Council will be obligated to ensure the provision of at least one toilet at Station Road for the next decade. This may entail keeping only a few cubicles operational and repurposing the remainder for storage or other uses, contingent on demand. The exact cost of cleaning and maintenance remains undetermined, though EDDC can provide guidance, and the town council will have the flexibility to engage its own contractors.
Meanwhile, plans for the upgraded Category A toilets at Lime Kiln have been revealed. The existing block will be replaced with a modern facility featuring four unisex cubicles, a disabled toilet, and a 'Changing Places' facility for individuals with severe disabilities. Additionally, the new structure will include outdoor showers, a bike rack, a water bottle refill station, and seating amenities.
