Community litter pickers collect 30 bags of rubbish.

Big hearted residents in Exeter have been out and about clearing up their neighbourhood and pick up 30 bags worth of rubbish.

People in Whipton managed to collect over 30 bags of litter during a community clear-up, including more than 100 discarded dog poo bags and several fly-tipped items.

Litter picking tools, high-visibility vests and gloves were provided by Exeter City Council.

A team of nine volunteers, plus two dogs, set out on the litter pick, covering the length of Hill Lane, which is a popular footpath and dog walking spot stretching from Hill Barton Road to Pinhoe Road, ending up in the Star Inn, with sandwiches and homemade scones kindly provided by Sharon, the landlady.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management said: “I’d like to thank local ward councillor Liz Pole for organising the event, which brought members of the local community together, picking up litter and sharing pride in their neighbourhood.

“It is heartening to see such community spirit but its sad to see that so many people seem to be unaware that the best place to dispose of dog poo is to take it home and pop it into their own black waste bin where it will be taken for incineration on waste collection day.”

There is another litter pick organised on Saturday 16 November along School Lane, starting at 10.30am at the Beacon Centre and ending in the Arena Cafe.

Any groups or individuals who are organising an event and would like to book equipment for a litter pick are urged to contact the Council on 01392 262630.
