Organisers of the Community Speedwatch Scheme in Newton Poppleford are calling for more volunteers to join their initiative aimed at reducing speeding through the village.
The current team of ten volunteers has been actively monitoring vehicle speeds for over two years, but additional support would allow for more frequent roadside sessions, potentially increasing the scheme's impact.
The main goal of the Community Speedwatch Team is to encourage drivers to adhere to the 30mph speed limit. Over the past two years, volunteers have observed that most drivers tend to slow down when they spot the team by the roadside. For vehicles that don't, their details are recorded and passed on to the police, who then issue a formal warning letter to the vehicle's owner.
In addition to local efforts, police officers occasionally participate in sessions and collaborate with the team to conduct Road Safety operations on the A3052.
A spokesperson for the scheme urged residents to get involved, saying: “If you’re concerned about the speed of traffic through the village or worried about the safety of your friends and family, joining the Community Speedwatch Team is a proactive way to make a difference.”
A similar team is also stationed in Colaton Raleigh at the same time, giving drivers an extra reminder to reduce their speed.
Volunteering is highly flexible, with no fixed rota. Participants can choose how many sessions to take part in each month, as well as the days and times that work best for them.
