A council-supported project has helped 50 local people develop essential cooking skills and gain confidence in the kitchen, promoting healthier lifestyles and greater self-reliance. The initiative aimed to support families and individuals by offering practical hands-on sessions and resources to make nutritious cooking both accessible and enjoyable.
The project delivered a variety of cooking experiences, including group workshops in Sidmouth and Cranbrook, as well as tailored one-to-one support in Honiton. Participants learned how to prepare healthy meals on a budget, with sessions focusing on building confidence, improving cooking techniques, and exploring affordable meal options.
Families were also provided with free recipe boxes—some part-funded by Sidmouth Foodbank—containing ingredients and step-by-step recipes so they could recreate meals at home. This ensured the learning extended beyond the sessions, allowing participants to continue practicing their skills and adopting healthier eating habits.
The project worked closely with schools, food banks, and mental health services to reach as many people as possible, offering targeted support where it was needed most. Through these partnerships, the initiative engaged 19 adults and 31 children, creating a positive impact on both individuals and the wider community.
By focusing on practical skills and community engagement, the project empowered participants to take control of their diets, improve their health, and strengthen connections within their local communities.
