Children living in temporary accommodation in Exeter won’t go without a chocolate treat this Easter thanks to the generosity of people in the city.
Once again, Exeter Temple Salvation Army and its team of volunteers has come up trumps to help youngsters across the city.
Around 45 bags of Easter eggs were this week collected by the City Council’s housing team from the Salvation Army’s base at Friars Gate for distribution to families living in temporary accommodation this Easter.
The Salvation Army have been running appeals in the city for over 20 years, with people asked to donate toys for children at Christmas.
At Easter the Salvation Army provide Bags of Hope containing Easter eggs and cards made by the children of St Leonards School to those attending their weekend Community Meals programme as well as those living in Salvation Army accommodation.
This year the Salvation Army formed a collaboration with Co-op Funeralcare in St Thomas, and their staff, customers and the local community donated around 200 eggs, which meant the scope of the project could be expanded to include children in temporary accommodation.
Cllr Marina Asvachin, Lead Councillor for Housing, Homelessness Prevention and Customer Services, said: “What a wonderful gesture from the Salvation Army and those who have donated to the appeal. I would like to thank everyone who has played their part in spreading some happiness this Easter.”
Majors Carl and Elizabeth Di-Palma, of the Exeter Temple Salvation Army said: “We are always so overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Exeter. Even in times of difficulty they always find a way to put a hand in their pockets and help those less fortunate. I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to this appeal, your generosity does not go unnoticed.”
