Exeter has the most expensive taxi fares in Devon, with a two-mile fare weighing in at £9.50.
The city’s charges were increased last year, and place it equal ninth in a table of 336 local authorities.
London (Heathrow) tops the nationwide table at £13.60 for a two-mile daytime trip, while Bolsover in Derbyshire has the cheapest at £4.60. The average is £7.40.
The figures are included in the latest edition of the National Hackney Fares Table, which will be considered next week by councillors in Teignbridge.
They will decide whether to increase taxi fares in the district by 10 per cent. It would be the first increase in Teignbridge since 2022.
If members of the Teignbridge licensing committee agree, the cost of a five-mile daytime trip in Teignbridge will be £15.62, compared with £14.30 at present. The same trip on evenings, Sundays and bank holidays will cost £23.44, up from £21.45 at present. Five miles over Christmas and New Year will cost £28.60, compared to the current £26.
The move has the support of more than 300 taxi drivers across Teignbridge, 95 per cent of whom backed the increase in charges.
Drivers do not have to charge the full amount on the meter, and the purpose of the tariff is to set a maximum amount that can be charged.
According to the table included in the Teignbridge report, Devon councils’ two-mile daytime Hackney fares are: Exeter £9.50 (last increased in 2025); Torridge £8.79 (2025); East Devon £8.70 (2025); Torbay £8.30 (2024); Plymouth £8.10 (2023); South Hams £7.80 (2022); North Devon £7.30 (2022); Teignbridge £7.26 (2022); Mid Devon £6.80 (2022). West Devon is one of four councils that has no set fare.
