Exeter University success in influential global subject rankings

Exeter subjects from across both Science and Arts & Humanities have been recognised as being amongst the very best worldwide, according to an influential league table.

Fourteen subjects are now positioned in the world’s top 100 – with nine in the top 50 – in the latest QS World University Subject Rankings, published on Wednesday March 12th, 2025.

The highest ranked subject is Mineral and Mining Engineering which is placed 19th in the world.

Environmental Sciences(=36th), the University’s Sports-Related Subjects (37th), Geology (39th), Geography (40th), Earth and Marine Sciences (=44th) , Archaeology (45th) Classics and Ancient History (=45th) , and English Language and Literature (47th) all feature in the elite Top 50 grouping.   

Other notable entries include Anatomy & Physiology, History, Theology, and Politics & International Studies, which all feature within the global Top 100.    

The University also has at least one top 100 subject in each of the ‘Subject Areas’ that map onto three Faculties – Environment, Science and Economy, Health and Life Sciences, and Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Arts and Humanities is the highest overall broad subject ranking, placed =90th. 

The 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released today by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 18,300 individual university programmes, taken by students at more than 1700 universities in 100 locations around the world, across 55 academic disciplines.

QS uses five key metrics to compile the subject rankings. Reputation indicators are based on the responses of more than 240,000 employers and academics to QS surveys while Citations per Paper and H-Index measure research impact and productivity. International Research Network (IRN) is used to assess cross-border research collaboration.
