At 21.29 yesterday (Monday) evening, H.M. Coastguard requested the launch of the RNLI Exmouth lifeboat to the report of a two individuals unable to make progress against the tide in their kayaks.
The ILB D-805 George Bearman II and three volunteer crew launched at 21.35 and made best speed to the reported location.
The volunteers quickly located the casualties on the beach at Dawlish. They shared that despite a number of attempts to make it back to Exmouth, they had been prevented by the strong tidal flow and had capsized a number of times in their attempts. Rather than risking it again, they had called 999 and sought assistance from the Coastguard.
The crew transferred the tired, wet, but otherwise unharmed, individuals back to the Mamhead slipway and provided them with safety advice. Neither had been wearing a floatation device that could have prevented a more serious incident if they had capsized again.
