At 17.57 last night H.M. Coastguard requested the launch of the RNLI Exmouth lifeboat to the report of a windsurfer in distress in the vicinity of Starcross.
The ILB D-805 George Bearman II and three volunteer crew launched at 18.05 and made best speed to the reported location.
The crew were assisted during the shout with more detailed location information by colleagues from NCI Exmouth and an eyewitness who had called 999. Using this information the volunteers quickly located the windsurfer and recovered him, and his equipment, to the lifeboat.
The individual was exhausted, but luckily otherwise unharmed. The crew then returned the casualty to the shore and his waiting friends, who were able to take him into their care.
A positive result for our volunteer crew to an individual who was clearly in a very difficult position. Luckily his friend had been able to raise the alarm and get help to him quickly, before anything more serious could happen.
The lifeboat was ready again for service at 19.10.
