The family of a man who went missing during a Christmas Day sea swim in Devon have said they are “heartbroken” by their loss, describing him as deeply loved.
Matthew Upham, 63, a local antiques dealer, is feared to have drowned after being swept out to sea at Budleigh Salterton on Christmas morning. He has been locally named as one of two men who disappeared during the incident. A second man, believed to be in his 40s, is also missing and is thought to have entered the water in an attempt to rescue Mr Upham.
Mr Upham was described as an accomplished and experienced sea swimmer who swam almost daily and knew the local waters well.
In a statement shared on social media on Boxing Day, his family said: “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved family member Matthew Upham, who was reported missing on Christmas morning.
“We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the emergency services who responded, particularly the RNLI and coastguard, for their dedication, professionalism and tireless efforts during this extremely difficult time. We are profoundly grateful for their compassion and support.
“As we grieve and support one another, we kindly ask that our family’s privacy is respected. We thank everyone for their understanding, kindness and condolences.”
