On Tuesday, January 23rd, at 1:00 PM, Devon and Somerset Fire Service responded to a house fire in West Hill Lane, Budleigh Salterton. Fire crews from Exmouth, Middlemoor, and Sidmouth, alongside a supporting officer, attended the incident involving a two-story domestic property.

Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke and flames issuing from a ground-floor window. Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, and one main jet to tackle the blaze.

The fire, located in the ground-floor study, caused significant damage, leaving 30% of the ground floor damaged by fire and the remainder of the property 100% affected by smoke. Crews employed twelve breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, three thermal imaging cameras, a safety jet, a positive pressure fan, casualty care equipment, and small tools to contain the fire.

A male occupant, suffering from smoke inhalation, was treated by ambulance personnel and transported to the hospital for precautionary checks. Crews also rescued a pet dog from the property, performing resuscitation using a pet oxygen therapy mask. The dog was later taken to a local veterinary practice for further observation and is now safely back home.

The fire was determined to be accidental.
