Popular waterside benches spruced up by volunteers

Three much-loved waterside benches in Exeter have been refurbished, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the support of the City Council.

Volunteers from the Friends of Exeter Ship Canal (FESC) recently completed stripping, revarnishing, and painting the ironwork of the benches near Exeter’s Canal Basin.

One of the benches is a memorial to local couple Len Squire and Marie Squire.

The benches, which are opposite the City Council’s river and canal office, are popular with members of the public, with many pausing there for a rest as they stroll from the Canal Basin across to the Quay.

Labour was provided by an FESC team of volunteers, while equipment and materials were provided by the City Council.

An FESC spokesperson said: "A special mention goes to Troy from the City Council, who was street cleaning and emptying bins in the area, and kindly offered to take away the litter the team had removed from under the benches."

At the end of the project, the Squires’ bronze dedication plaque was cleaned, polished, and reattached to the bench.
