Saving 16,000 litres of water this National Allotment Week in Exeter

One of the largest allotment sites in the South West, Guys and Hylton Allotments in Exwick, can now capture an additional 16,000 litres of rainwater annually. South West Water supported the initiative, ensuring sustainable water use for planting and maintaining produce.

One of the biggest allotment sites in the South West can now capture an additional 16,000 litres of rainwater each year, dramatically cutting down on mains supply, thanks to the support of South West Water.

Based in Exwich, Exeter, the Guys and Hylton Allotments has over 350 volunteers using the allotments on average which is no mean feat to supply. The amount of water needed to plant, grow and maintain their abundance of natural produce can drastically increase their bills – especially during the hot and dry summer months.

Thanks to the support given by South West Water’s Water-Saving Community Fund, the sowing and growing of all the incredible flowers and produce at the allotments is set to thrive better than ever as they have now been able to purchase four more IBC containers.

Each of these containers can hold 1000 litres of rainwater, meaning all the allotments can now benefit from an additional 4000 litres of harvested rainwater three to four times a year, drastically reducing their dependence on mains supply.

Gerald Tallamy, from the Guys and Hylton Allotments, said: “Being green thumbed as we are, all of us here at the allotments are aware of the tole that the hot summer months can take on water supply. Having this rainwater harvesting system in place will ensure that we save any water where possible, reduce our reliance on mains supply and cut down on allotment costs too.”

Megan Williams, South West Water’s Water Efficiency Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support allotments such as Guys and Hylton this National Allotment Week. Communities, such as the one at these allotments, are constantly impressing us with their drive and commitment to save water.”
