South West Water Update on Exmouth Sewage Spill

South West Water has apologised for a sewage leak in Exmouth that has led to a 'don't bathe' warning from the Environment Agency and East Devon District Council.

South West Water has apologised for a sewage leak in Exmouth that has led to a 'don't bathe' warning from the Environment Agency and East Devon District Council.

A burst pipe at the Maer Road pumping station caused raw sewage to spill into the sea in Exmouth earlier this week. The company is still working to repair the burst but has struggled to manage the overflow, resulting in additional spills from the station. The Environment Agency continues to advise against bathing in Exmouth waters due to the pollution.

East Devon District Council has also advised against swimming off Exmouth. The EA stated, "Swimming is not advised at Exmouth as sewage is spilling from a South West Water storm overflow. This is related to the burst rising main on Wednesday." South West Water commented, "Our teams are working around the clock to fix the burst pipe from Maer Road pumping station. We are doing everything possible to resolve the situation quickly. Unfortunately, despite using tankers to transfer flows, we haven’t been able to keep up with the levels in the network, leading to spills from the overflow."

The company added, "We have kept the Environment Agency informed so they can take appropriate steps to protect the environment and public health. We deeply regret this incident and understand the concerns it has caused for customers and visitors."
