Supermarket giant Aldi has announced plans to open a store in Exmouth, creating up to 40 jobs.

Supermarket giant Aldi has announced plans to open a store in Exmouth, creating up to 40 jobs.

The retailer said it was ‘excited’ to reveal plans for a new food store, alongside outline plans for flexible employment space, on the Goodmores Farm development site, Dinan Way, in Brixington.

Aldi has launched an online ‘virtual’ exhibition in a bid to gauge community views through a public consultation, from today (March 10) until Sunday, March 25.

Public feedback will help shape a ‘hybrid’ planning application, to go before East Devon District Council (EDDC).

A new website set up for the consultation will remain online throughout the entire planning process.

The closest Aldi store to the site is in Exeter.

Elliott Saunders, Aldi real estate director, said: “We are proud to bring forward plans for a new Aldi store in Exmouth. We encourage residents to participate in our virtual consultation to learn more about the scheme and share their views.”

An Aldi spokesman said: “We want to ensure that the local community has their say on the proposals and we would encourage you to complete a questionnaire.

“We will carefully review all of the feedback received before finalising and submitting a planning application to the council.”

The spokesman added: “Aldi will carefully review all the feedback received. This will play a vital role in shaping the planning application we submit to East Devon District Council in the subsequent months.”

He said the website ‘will remain accessible throughout the entire planning process’.

The supermarket giant said the proposals were ‘hybrid’, with the Aldi element proposed in full detail, and the employment building, outline.

Aldi said: “We are therefore only showing indicative layouts for the flexible employment space at this point in time.”

Key details of the proposed Aldi store in Exmouth include:

·      A site accessible by car, bus, cycling and walking

·      Vehicle access to the supermarket will be off Dinan Way, via a new entrance

·      ‘Extensive’ cycling parking

·      Car parking for 125 cars

·      Space to install additional EV points

·      50 parking spaces for a ‘flexible employment space’ on the site

·      Three to four store deliveries a day to the site

·      Outline plans for flexible employment space, of 13 units across four buildings, in the northern part of the site

·      Up to 40 new jobs for the new Aldi store

·      Around 50 parking spaces for the flexible employment space.

·      Total investment of £10 million: benefiting Exmouth and East Devon more widely.

·      An aim to recruit store managers and staff from the local area

·      A transport assessment of the roads near the site
