The students from Exeter College have been given an opportunity to observe engineers working on a project to rebuild a collapsed wall in Countess Wear Road.
Engineers of the future are getting a chance to gain hands-on experience of a real-life engineering project in Exeter.
The students from Exeter College have been given an opportunity to observe engineers working on a project to rebuild a collapsed wall in Countess Wear Road.
The work experience has been made possible by Exeter City Council.
Following a competitive tendering process for the rebuild, Crestmoor Construction was awarded the work. Under a clause in the contract, Crestmoor was asked to provide ‘social value’ and give something back to the community.
That’s where Exeter College came in. Civil Engineering students from the College have been briefed on the scheme and have visited the construction site to meet engineers and get a feel for the project.
Jeanette Doherty, of Exeter College, said: “I think I speak for everyone when I say that we are thrilled to be involved with this scheme. This is valuable hands-on experience for the students.
“They are learning engineering techniques directly from engineers, as well as project management, community engagement, planning, and the materials involved – things they have learnt in theory at Exeter College but are now putting into real-life practice. What a great opportunity.”
The students have been given access to the design drawings and site photos, as well as visiting the project site to see the solutions implemented.
Mike King, of Crestmoor Construction said: “We’re delighted to be able to help out and inspire the students from Exeter College and give something back to the local communities. There’s no substitute for getting hands-on experience in the field and hopefully the youngsters will learn from this project.”
Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to shape the next generation of engineers. Not only are we repairing a vital piece of local infrastructure, but we are helping to build the foundations of engineering for the future. It was really important for us to include the social value clause to enable valuable training opportunities for our young people.”
