The council, which has lodged the application itself, says the plans have been developed after lengthy consultations with local people. If approved, they will transform the existing facilities into a ‘light and inclusive space’ connected to Ludwell Valley Park.

A new community hub to replace a ‘less than welcoming’ leisure centre in Exeter is likely to be approved next week – even though money to pay for it has yet to be found.
Exeter City Council’s planning committee will assess the application for a new wellbeing hub off Burnthouse Lane in Wonford when it meets next Monday.
The council, which has lodged the application itself, says the plans have been developed after lengthy consultations with local people. If approved, they will transform the existing facilities into a ‘light and inclusive space’ connected to Ludwell Valley Park.
Council leader Phil Bialyk said the project is ‘fantastic’, and would support local people to be healthy, happy and active every day.
However, the council still needs to find the funds for the project, and is exploring a number of sources. Having planning permission in place is likely to make the proposal more attractive for funders.
The application is for the refurbishment of the existing Wonford Sports Centre and Community and Learning Centre, including demolishing the existing gym, Phoenix Centre and outdoor changing rooms, and building a new hub and football changing facilities.
The new hub will accommodate a cafe, changing facilities, studio and gym. The application has received no objections.
When the proposal was first published a year ago, the city’s lead councillor for leisure Duncan Wood (Lab, Pinhoe) said: “We have been working very closely with the community in Wonford on these plans. This building will benefit the local community by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment to encourage wider participation in social, wellbeing and physical activities.”
But, he added: “There is still a long way to go and we still need to secure the necessary funding which will make these plans a reality.”
