Avian influenza H5N1, also called bird flu, has been confirmed in commercial poultry at premises near Teignmouth this week, meaning that all poultry will need to be humanely culled. A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone has been put in place around the premises. You can watch a video here which explains what this means for bird keepers in those zones.

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) covers the whole of England and came into force on Saturday, January 25, 2025, following increasing cases of bird flu. The AIPZ measures apply to all bird keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock. More information for captive bird owners is available on the GOV.UK website.

Although the risk to human health is low, it is important not to pick up or move dead birds if you spot them when out and about. If you see dead wild birds and suspect it may be avian influenza, you can report this to Defra. If you spot dead poultry or domestic birds that may have been dumped, please it report to Trading Standards.
