Teignbridge drives forward with green vehicles initiative

Teignbridge District Council has made a significant step towards a greener future with the renewal of its vehicle fleet.

As part of the recent fleet renewal, the council has introduced a range of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), marking another milestone in the journey towards net zero emissions. The fleet, which accounts for approximately 50% of the council’s direct carbon footprint, will see a substantial reduction in emissions with the introduction of BEVs. This transition is not just about replacing old vehicles; it is about future-proofing operations and ensuring that Teignbridge Council is playing its part in the fight against climate change.

The new vans and cars will cut the council’s carbon emissions by an impressive 58 tonnes of CO2 per annum – that's the equivalent of heating 28 typical UK homes. This is a crucial step in the Climate Emergency Carbon Action Plan, which prioritises the decarbonisation of the vehicle fleet. By transitioning to BEVs, it not only reduces TDC’s reliance on fossil fuels but also sets the stage for a sustainable future.

The Forde Road Depot is well placed to support this transition, with work completed to upgrade the power supply to accommodate the new vehicles and prepare the site for continued fleet decarbonisation.
