Arrests and cars seized during road safety operation, Torquay

A targeted operation in Torquay to tackle dangerous driving saw nine vehicles seized, four drivers arrested and a number of people found using their mobile phones at the wheel.

The proactive operation identified drivers breaking the law and aimed to educate others on the fatal five most common causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads. The operation saw officers in marked and unmarked cars taking to the roads to identify people responsible for road offences.

The offences discovered by officers included:

  • 9 x vehicles seized, for offences including drivers holding no insurance or licence
  • 3 x drivers arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs
  • 1 x disqualified driver arrested
  • 6 x mobile phone offences
  • 5 x people found not wearing a seatbelt
  • 1 x person found driving without due care
  • 131 x drivers were found to be travelling at excessive speeds
  • 7 x other vehicle offences

All drivers have been educated on the dangers of their actions. Where suitable, drivers have been reported and suitable penalties will be issued, including speed awareness courses, points on licenses and fines.

Inspector Wesley Watkins, who helped co-ordinate the operation in Torquay, said: "Dangerous driving causes serious and often life changing injuries on our roads. In tragic circumstances, it can lead to people losing their lives.

“This operation was hugely important for us to make sure we’re doing our part in keeping people safe on the road. Our focus was to educate drivers, deter dangerous behaviour and identify those breaking the law in an effort to create positive, safe, sustainable change. Our officers will continue to carry out this work at different times and locations throughout the year. “

Inspector Watkins added: “As a message to those knowingly committing offences on the road, a change to your behaviour could prevent an accident or save a life. Our officers are out there and they will be taking action if you are found to be breaking the law. Please think twice.”

The ‘Fatal Five’ are contributory factors that cause serious road traffic collisions. This includes careless driving, drink/drug driving, failing to wear seatbelts, using mobile phones (and other in-car distractions) and speeding.

Drivers who commit offences could receive a fine and points on their licence, a court appearance and even imprisonment for more serious offences.
