Start planning your street party to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day

The 8th May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). The day marks the Allied victory and the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Street parties, barbecues and community get togethers will be held across the country, echoing the celebrations 80 years ago as the population welcomed the end of the war in Europe.

Torbay communities who want to commemorate the 80th anniversary with a street party are urged to start planning now. We are encouraging communities to plan events for the early May Bank Holiday on Monday 5 May. The Bank Holiday Monday will coincide with the start of commemorations at the Cenotaph.

Community groups and residents who would like to hold a street party are encouraged to discuss plans with their neighbours and local businesses. This will make sure that everyone has the opportunity to be involved in the commemoration.

Whilst there are no charges for road closures, you will need the relevant road closed and diversion signs which can be hired from SWISCo for a fee.

15 August 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) and the end of the Second World War. The commemoration of VE Day and VJ Day will form a significant part of this year’s English Riviera Airshow. The airshow takes place over the weekend of 30, 31 May and 1 June.

Councillor Jacqueline Thomas, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture & Events and Corporate Services for Torbay Council said: “The 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day are a significant opportunity to commemorate the Allied victory in Europe and the end of the Second World War. The commemorations will act as a point of remembrance of the millions who lost their lives in the conflict, as well as a celebration of peace.

“I’m sure that many of our local communities will want to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day by getting together with neighbours and friends. I’d encourage people thinking of holding a street party to advise us of their plans to allow commemorations to take place on 5 May.”
